What to Do the Moment a Window Breaks

A window can fail in a second. A storm branch, a stray ball, a slammed sash in a January cold snap, and suddenly a room off Butternut Street is open to the weather. What you do in the first hour protects your family, your floors, and your wallet. Here is the order that works.
Keep Everyone Away From the Glass
Broken tempered glass crumbles, but plate and older glass break into sharp shards that scatter well past the window. Get kids and pets out of the room, put on shoes, and do not touch the frame until you have gloves. If the pane is still hanging in the sash, do not try to pull it free. Loose glass drops without warning.
Secure the Opening
An open window is both a weather problem and a security problem. Tape a heavy trash bag or plastic sheet over the opening from the inside to slow rain and wind, then cut a piece of plywood or rigid foam to wedge into the frame if you have it. This is a stopgap. A proper weather-tight board-up seals the opening far better and buys you time to get the right replacement.
Clean Up Safely
Pick up the large pieces by hand with gloves, then use a broom for the mid-size shards. For the tiny fragments you cannot see, press a slice of bread or packing tape over the area to lift them. Vacuuming last catches what is left in the carpet. Do this before anyone walks the room in socks.
Decide: Repair the Glass or Replace the Window
If the frame is sound and square, we can often replace just the glass or the sash and leave your trim alone. If the frame is rotted, racked, or the window is old and drafty anyway, a full replacement fixes the framing and the flashing at the same time. A fogged or cracked pane on a newer window usually means only the insulated glass unit needs swapping. When in doubt, a fast call sorts it out. Our emergency window repair crew can tell you which path fits over the phone.
Call for a Same-Day Board-Up
The sooner the opening is secured, the less water and cold get in and the smaller the repair bill. We keep board-up materials and common glass on the truck, so most Syracuse calls are closed up the same day. When you are ready, contact us and we will confirm the size and give you a real arrival window.
